Making the most of ONE RAINY DAY in St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador #canada #maritimes 🇨🇦
In this video, I take you on a rain-soaked one day tour of St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador. As the easternmost city in North America, St. John's is geographically closer to the shores of Ireland than it is to much of western Canada - a full 6 hour flight from Vancouver and nearly the same from Calgary. Its isolation in the North Atlantic as well as its pervasive Irish heritage have helped preserve its unique accent and culture over the centuries. This is one of Canada's most unique cities and provinces, and though you can't control the rain and wind, the city offers enough to see and do regardless of the weather.
I began my one day layover in this provincial capital with a walk down bustling George Street - St. John's answer to Dublin's Temple Bar - followed by a walk down Water Street, where I sample some of the city's best coffee before calling at the Terry Fox memorial to pay tribute to this Canadian hero. After, I get utterly drenched on a walk up Signal Hill - the site of the world's first transatlantic radio signal - for views of the iconic Cabot Tower (and in theory, some amazing coastal views, which didn't quite happen today, given the thick fog). After, I dry myself off with a tasty pint of Hazy IPA in an old firehouse at the excellent Bannerman Brewing Company. My tour winds down with a tour of my excellent room at the Hilton Garden Inn followed by a dinner of codfish cheeks and tongues at the excellent Cannery Kitchen & Social.
Have you ever been to St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador? If so, how do YOU deal with rainy weather while travelling? Let me know in the comments below.

Is Sydney, Nova Scotia worth visiting? (Exploring the heart of Cape Breton Island) | Canada 🇨🇦

You've probably never heard of Sydney, Nova Scotia. I can't blame you - it's remote location on its namesake harbour on the north coast of Cape Breton Island makes it one of the most hard-to-reach locations in Atlantic Canada. A long five hour drive from Halifax, this small town is technically the province’s second-largest city (now called the Cape Breton Regional Municipality), and is without ...

The ruins of Bering Hill are undoubtedly the most fascinating place on the mostly abandoned island of Adak, Alaska, and exploring them was like walking back in time into the Cold War era. So, pro-tip from a local that's taken this trip: When leaving the harbors, it is going to be rocky (basically until you're no longer surrounded by land). It's just the way the boats are designed and how the water cavetates around it in the harbors themselves. Once you hit open water it gets much smoother. When you're still in harbor though, if you like wildlife, I would suggest finding a window or if the weather permits, head up on deck. Pretty much until you're passed the point acconi lighthouse (or what's left of it, basically, the cliff face on the North Sydney side of the harbor that is the last 'close' part of land), you have a really good chance of seeing otters and other sea life around the boat. The otters, especially like messing around in the wakes of the boat before it really gets up to speed. From when you lose sight of the Cape Breton highlands, until you get to Newfoundland, if you look back towards the wake of the ship in the summer you have a very good chance of seeing Dolphins playing in the churned water and sometimes they'll swim along side. If you're lucky you'll also see the occasional pod of whales. The trick for finding whales is to scan the horrizon to see if you can see any spouts. Once you do, watch the area of the water it came from and if you're lucky the whales might put on a show of breeching and tail slapping.

    So, to explain why the museum closed: It's a non-profit organization that relies on the student employment program to run. The government generally only allows 8-10 weeks for the summer employment of students (starting June) so thats why you see a lot of those smaller things closing. They just don't have the funds to employ people full time. This video, despite being posted only 3 weeks ago, is also out of date as there is now a new ship that does the Argentina run (just started a few weeks ago).

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave День тому

      This video was filmed in September 2023, so that's probably why. That's clearly indicated in the video description. Good to know about the new ship & why so many tourist sights close relatively early in the smaller towns 👍

    Glad you came to visit our foggy little island! Fun fact: the First Nations name for Cape Breton is "Unama'ki," meaning "Land of the Fog." I think i heard you say it was in September, which is a shame, since all the beauty, good weather and fun stuff happens between June and late August. But I do agree with others that Sydney is, for the most part, pretty boring. The real fun and adventure lies to the north on the Cabot Trail, or south at the Fortress of Louisburg, and all through-out on the many hiking trails, parks, and lakes that criss-cross and dot the island. I hope you get a chance to come back during the summer.

    Most locals consider Ice Hockey their religion, so you might want to change your comment to fit the new religion. Canadians have not been challenged by a major war that might cause them to look deeper within themselves. If this happens then churches and chaplaincy might once again gain some importance within them.

    • @DrifterDave

      That's very true. That all depends, I suppose. Are you coming from outside of the Schengen area? If so, you'll need to pass through Schengen customs. If you are coming from Spain, then you will not pass through customs but can leave the airport without any problems.

      @DrifterDave 6 днів тому

      Back during Covid, any videos that mentioned the word were either demonetized or removed as "controversial subject matter". I wanted to talk about it without getting the strike, so censoring the word was my only option. Otherwise, the video would have either not appeared on YT, or at best I'd have made zero dollars from the content. It was a strange world back then...

    Is this on the newest ship of their fleet that was delayed for a month? Is this a rougher ride than the short ferry ?

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave 6 днів тому

      I believe it's the same ship! As for the rougher ride, I'd say that's a given, as the route to Argentia enters the open ocean (and you can definitely feel the sway) compared to the relatively sheltered Port-aux-Basques crossing.

      I could see that! My cabin was extortionate but I know that I wouldn't have been able to function the next day without one. I was also healing from a major neck injury at the time, so I really wanted something comfortable to rest up! In the future, I think I'd try to bring an air mattress and set it up in the theatre area - seemed to be a common theme among some passengers.

    Great place to visit, but it costs 1:21 more to live here than Seattle, Wa. Gas $5/gal, water $3.50/gal. Propane is less at $1.75/gal. Meats are more, rent is.more because it is a beach town. Building is more (90 lb bag of concrete in Seattle is around $13, in Todos Santos is $23.) Craft beers cost the same. These are just some examples. The only thing that costs less is eating out, about 2/3 the cost. As I said, great place to visit, but too expensive to live.
